With recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), research has analyzed how large language models (LLMs) can be used in brainstorming. Most studies focus on how AI can support facilitation or assist individuals. However, incorporating an AI-agent in large group brainstorming that simultaneously collaborates with multiple individuals has not been fully explored. This study explores the effects of an AI brainstorming agent (AIBA), which resembles a human brainstorming participant as closely as possible, on large group brainstorming. Therein, we developed and evaluated a prototype of such an agent in an experiment with 42 brainstorming participants. The results indicate that AIBA contributed to generating a greater variety of covered topics and increased the novelty of ideas, leading to an expansion of the solution space and a potential reduction in production deficits. By deriving design lessons, this research also provides insights into the design of AI-agents for large group brainstorming.

Digital Brainstorming Agents
Digital Agents have the potential to be effective collaborators and significantly improve team collaboration practices. This study introduces the concept of AIThinkLets, which are repeatable collaboration activities involving Digital Agents. Using the Brainstorming process as an example, we demonstrate the applicability of AI-ThinkLets. We extend the existing OnePage ThinkLet with the Digital Agent by specifying its possible setup and functionality. This study provides insights for practitioners, orchestrators, and researchers. By integrating Digital Agents into established ThinkLets, we develop synergies that enhance the capabilities of human actors and enable new collaboration patterns.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a subject of great interest for its potential to enhance human intelligence. However, existing findings suggest that user opinions about AI are mixed, with some embracing it while others express deep concern and try to avoid it. Here, we conducted a comprehensive review of relevant research to identify potential antecedents to AI aversion. Based on the theory of effective use and the adaptive structuration theory, we collapsed the precursors into four dimensions to develop a concise research model that holistically explains users’ AI aversion. We then conducted online experiments to test the hypotheses empirically. The results indicate that perceived AI bias and perceived social influence are strong predictors of AI aversion. Additionally, a significant difference was found between the simple and complex task groups. These findings provide insights into the factors that contribute to AI aversion and have implications for designing and developing AI systems.

Engineering design requires humans to make complex, multi-objective decisions involving trade-offs where it is challenging to identify the best solution. AI-embedded computational support tools are increasingly used to aid in such scenarios, enhancing the design decision-making process. However, over- or under-reliance on imperfect “blackbox” models may prevent optimal outcomes. To investigate AI-assisted decision-making in engineering design, two complementary experiments (N = 90) were conducted. Participants chose between pairs of aircraft jet engine brackets and were tasked with selecting the better design based on two (Experiment 1) or three (Experiment 2) competing objectives. Participants received simulated AI suggestions, which correctly suggested a better design, incorrectly suggested a worse design, or arbitrarily suggested an approximately equivalent design. At times, these suggestions were accompanied by an example-based explanation. Results demonstrate that participants follow suggestions less than expected when the model can objectively determine the better-performing alternative, often underutilizing the model’s advice to their detriment. When the “better” choice is uncertain, the tendency to follow an arbitrary suggestion differs, with overutilization occurring only in the bi-objective case. There is no evidence that providing an explanation of the model’s suggestion impacts decision-making. The results provide valuable insights into how engineering designers’ multi-objective decisions may be affected – positively, negatively, or not at all – by computational tools meant to assist them.

Designing sustainable and innovative products today requires more than just good ideas as it demands speed, flexibility, teamwork, and smart use of technology. This study used a systematic review approach guided by PRISMA to examine how Agile project management and emerging technologies enhance concurrent engineering for sustainable and collaborative product design. Literature was sourced from five major databases using targeted search terms. After a rigorous three-phase screening and quality appraisal, relevant studies were thematically synthesized around Agile, AI, automation, cloud platforms, ethics, circular economy, and composite manufacturing. The result showed that revealed that integrating Agile project management into concurrent engineering enhances flexibility, collaboration, and design responsiveness. Design automation and AI tools improve accuracy and decision-making, while cloud-based platforms strengthen real-time teamwork. Generative design supports creativity and rapid iteration. Ethical concerns like transparency and inclusivity emerged as essential. Circular economy strategies help reduce waste and extend product life. In composite manufacturing, concurrent engineering and group design improve material efficiency, product quality, and speed, demonstrating strong potential for sustainable innovation. The findings suggest that integrating Agile practices with emerging technologies creates a powerful framework for building smarter, greener, and more collaborative products now and in the future.

Large language models (LLMs) have provided unprecedented possibilities for personalizing educational experiences. Studies have addressed the potential of these models in supporting the learning process. Still, less attention has been given to how LLMs could help students to sustain their academic well-being. The current paper examines the use of LLMs in facilitating students’ help-seeking behaviors in an educational context. We build on earlier work on a rule-based chatbot providing students with support opportunities. First, we use thematic analysis with student support experts’ wordings on student support needs to build a support need classification model. Then, we utilize this classification model, GPT-4 API, and WhatsApp API, to build a support bot prototype and describe the development process and technological architecture. We discuss the possibilities of such technology in lowering barriers to help-seeking and producing data on student support needs and well-being for learning analytics applications.
