Blockchain-Enabling Technologies	Technologies such as encryption and consensus algorithms, cloud or other distributed compute infrastructures, tokens, messaging, digital wallets, and digital signatures are the underlying building blocks that are combined to build blockchain platforms. These platforms can be delivered as private, hybrid or public architectures and operational styles.
Blockchain-Inspired Solutions	Solutions that do not meet all the aspects of blockchain but combine some elements of the blockchain-enabling technologies to offer limited capabilities. Examples include automated messaging with a high degree of encryption based on less than 10-node distribution using a centralized notary or database. They lack the full extent of blockchain core tenets — especially tokenization and decentralization.
Blockchain Complete Solutions	Interoperable solutions that meet all the components of blockchain. These include record encryption and immutability, monetized tokenization and fungibility, decentralization via algorithmic trust, broad-scale shared P2P ledger distribution with self-sovereign identity management, and legally sound and secure semismart contracts. Services are consumed via Dapps across open-source environments.
Blockchain-Enhanced Solutions	Blockchain-enhanced solutions combine the full extent of blockchain complete solutions with other technologies such as AI and IoT. These deliver intelligent solutions allowing for dynamic programmability using AI-informed smart contracts; infrastructure capabilities for IOT-based multiasset micro transactions; self-sovereign identity management; and fully autonomous organizations operating as decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).

Blockchain is a term for a group of technologies whose primary aspects include the peer to peer distribution, decentralization, immutability, encryption and tokenization. The core aspect of blockchain is the distributed ledger, a cryptographically signed, irrevocable block of records shared by all participants in a peer-to-peer (P2P) network. Each block of records is time-stamped and references link to previous data blocks. These technologies create new possibilities in how we manage digital trust, establish transparency in a widely distributed peer-to-peer network, and exchange value across parties.

Range: 3 to 6 Years

Blockchain is three to six from early majority adoption due to a couple of key factors identified by Gartner research. First, blockchain is successfully being used in markets such as decentralized finance (DeFi) and game finance, and also in a few enterprise applications, especially in financial services and supply chains. But, there are multiple factors inhibiting growth.

Failed projects and concerns around the technology ecosystem maturity.
Technology companies and their customers, while intrigued by the new capabilities of blockchain, are unable to identify clear areas where they can get a significant return on investment using this technology versus other traditional enterprise technologies (such as databases and vertical-specific software) in vogue.
Nearly all blockchain projects require strong agreements and coordination among a disparate set of enterprises in the ecosystem, whose motivation and priorities may not align.

Blockchain technologies have been deployed in many emerging areas, the most prominent being DeFI and non-fungible token (NFT) markets. In addition to new areas, enterprises and technology providers have also invested in blockchain-inspired projects and products to improve efficiencies, but evidence of large-scale benefits remains sparse. While the technical features have been of interest and business innovation in certain areas (DeFi and NFTs) have been broad, the technology has not lived up to its promise to date, reflected in a lack of large and proven successes. Recently, the industry has been shifting away from the term “blockchain” and rebranding itself “Web3,” which represents a set of solutions that are powered by blockchain technologies. In part to reflect a more expansive vision in which users own their data, but also in part to provide a brand makeover. While the early stage of the blockchain technology landscape was dominated by pure-play solutions and large vendors, we are starting to see more technology providers that offer new solutions that combine some aspects of blockchain with other technologies (such as IoT) to create innovative solutions.

Further, blockchain projects require switching to new processes. Future adoption growth depends on two catalysts — success stories from traditional enterprises and better enterprise solutions that ease blockchain implementations. Without these, blockchain growth will be limited.

Mass: High

The impact of blockchain technologies is high since it offers new ways to represent assets, perform transactions and record them for the digital economy across virtually all sectors in the future. These capabilities can be useful to create new innovative markets and can also be applied in most commercial activity across many of the current industries and markets including DeFi and NFT art. Gartner sees investment in blockchain across all major industries, including financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, public sector and telecom. While investment has been broad and deep in both technology and business, translation of that investment into large critical systems has eluded most enterprises so far. This is driven by a combination of factors, including a lack of proven successes, complexity in driving business and technology change across an ecosystem, and evolving technology. Key use cases driven by decentralized software development, immutable personally identifiable information (and other information classifications), decentralized finance and low-trust supply chain provenance are key development areas.

Blockchain will enable enterprises to disrupt traditional business models therefore opening new markets and creating entirely new business opportunities like autonomous finance. Blockchain’s use will be driven both by innovative technology providers and their clients. As blockchain continues to evolve, we anticipate more varied uses of blockchain and more vendor solutions inspired by certain aspects of blockchain, rather than only those who rely on blockchain for most of their differentiation.

Recommended Actions:

Address partnership challenges by creating network effect and adding capabilities like interoperability, that help expand the impact of blockchain solutions across multiple industries and reduce negative impact of technology obsolescence.
Address the security vulnerabilities by adopting rigorous development methodologies and getting the solution audited from reputable security vendors.
Evaluate the various capabilities of blockchain individually (such as tokenizing assets or ensuring immutability across various parties), in addition to looking at wholesome possibilities, to identify opportunities to use it in your product or service portfolio for differentiation or clear ROI.
Ensure that you address all aspects necessary to succeed in blockchain initiatives — either directly through you or your partners. This includes, and is not limited to, items such as the ability to construct a business case, set up a governance mechanism, perform cost-benefit for all parties and integrate with other enterprise technologies.
